Saturday April 26, 2003 New blog for Symbian development
Recently, I've become interested in developing for Symbian,
the Operating System for 'limited devices' like mobile phones & PDA's.
So I've set up a new blog
at the aptly named Symbian Diaries
website.

ASCII stuff
Chickenman has been on hold for a while, but I've started a new Ascii
art comic called Entrance.
I've also kicked off a proposal for a Text Art
webzine.
Kepa Junkera
My girlfriend bought me Kepa Junkera's 00:00h which is very good, though
my favourite track is still Bok Espok, the first one I heard.
Then a few weeks ago while I was working in Bilbao, I told our Spanish
colleagues that I liked Kepa. One of them knew him and arranged to get
a signed copy of his latest CD Maren! Which has a remix of Bok Espok
(so I'm happy) and some other great tracks.
Dionysos
The greatest French rock band in the world?
Well, we could debate how much competition they've got, but Dionysos, on
the basis of Western sous le neige are fantastic. Sounding a little
like the Pixies, with great, off-beat melodies and very silly lyrics,
I like them a lot.
My name is John McEnroe
Do you know my poetry?
It will be written in blood
in the blood of the bad referees
Other new releases
Very excited about Tori Amos's new album, which on the first few listens
seems a great improvement on her more disappointing recent albums.
Liked Peter Gabriel's Up. Don't really know him, though my beloved
rates him a lot. "Growing Up" is an excellent track, very dark.
Looking forward to Badly Drawn Boy's new album. Today's Guardian had a CD with some of his songs
in it so that'll do until it gets released.

Interesting links
The Six-Lesson Schoolteacher
The lesson of bells is that no work is worth finishing, so why care too deeply about anything? Bells are the secret logic of schooltime; their argument is inexorable; bells destroy past and future, converting every interval into a sameness, as an abstract map makes every living mountain and river the same even though they are not. Bells inoculate each undertaking with indifference.

Thursday April 25, 2002 Kepa Junkera
Kepa Junkera is a Basque folk musician who collaborates with many
luminaries of 'world music'. I first heard a track of his ('Bok Espok') on one
of the 'radio' channels on a recent flight, and it is fantastic.
Having looked him up now, I discovered that this track is in collaboration
with experimental Swedish folk group Hedningarna.
Two samples can be found on
rootsworld.com
Must try to get hold of the album as soon as I can.

Wednesday April 24, 2002 Get blogging
This page will be boring no longer. I have scavenged the Asciimation
diary from the Chickenman site and will use this to 'power' this blog.
I have also added this lovely sea-blue colour scheme.
Quintorigo
I've just been listening to Grigio by the Italian group
Quintorigo. Quintorigo are an interesting rock group, who
use classical and jazz instruments like violin, cello, saxophone etc. - a bit
like the Finnish group Apocalyptica (who have done Metallica covers on
cellos), but they have a wider range. They've covered rock classics
(David Bowies' Heroes, Jimi Hendrix, and Highway Star) but
also do very characteristic pieces which are somewhere between bombastic
ratpack, jazz, pop, metal, and classical. Very interesting: I thought that
their first album, Rospo was the best album of 1999, but they are unknown
for example here in Britain. Shame really, I think it would be hard to
find their music here, so I took advantage of a recent trip to Italy to
buy Grigio. Some classic Quintorigo tunes, though some tracks are
taking me a while to get used to.

Sunday March 10, 2002 Still boring
Gosh, this is still seeing no action. I've been ill, and any
website energy I spend is still being taken up by Chickenman.
But I have some plans for future updates.
- Recipe list
- Articles about Liverpool, Merseyside, UK
where I'm currently living
- Travel guide/restaurant reviews of places I visit with work.

Wednesday February 20, 2002 Boring
Yes, this page really is very boring.
At some point I may do something about it.
The Chickenman site however is currently being updated almost every day,
and is far more interesting.
